Tingling toes – Cairns Podiatrist Diagnosis and Treatment

What causes tingling toes?

Symptoms such as tingling, numbness and burning are a common presentation in our Cairns Podiatry clinics. There can be a number of different causes and contributing factors that go along with these symptoms. Forefoot nerve impingement treatment Cairns is available at each of the FNQ Podiatry and Orthotics clinics.

Causes of tingling forefeet include:

  • Lumbar radiculopathy
    • Lower back and hip symptoms which radiate down the back of the thigh into the lower leg.
    • Generally a result of compression of the nerve roots as they come out of the spine
    • Symptoms generally come and go and cna come on as tingling, burning or even numbness
    • Often comes on with radicular pain, which is pain that originates from the lower back and travels down the nerve
    • Causes often include joint degeneration of the spine, bulging discs, Scoliosis or Lordosis
  • Diabetes
    • Long term poor control of blood sugars can affect the way the nerves send messages back to your brain
    • This is called Diabetic peripheral neuropathy
    • Peripheral neuropathy can cause a lack of sensation (blunt feeling) tingling, complete numbness and even burning
  • Other causes
    • Other common causes of tingling toes include:
      • Multiple sclerosis; a central nervous system disease that causes the immune system to attack the protective covering on nerves
      • Hypothyroidism; a condition in which your thyroid is underactive and can’t produce enough thyroid hormone to support your body’s needs
      • Kidney failure; which means your kidneys don’t filter the blood to the nerves adequately
      • Chronic alcoholism; the high blood alcohol levels damage the peripheral nerves
      • Pregnancy; as the uterus grows pressure can be placed on nerve pathways
