Are my orthotics capable of switching between shoes?

Are my orthotics capable of switching between shoes?

It’s no secret that custom orthotics are an investment and when it comes to investing it’s only natural to want and expect a positive return. Most people have a certain shoe in mind when they decide to go down the path of orthotics. This is usually the footwear which they would most commonly wear, or the footwear in which they are getting the majority of their foot pain.

Your podiatrist will always evaluate your footwear prior to dispensing your orthotics as there are specific features that shoes must have in order to get the most from your orthotics. These features do differ in regard to shoe style, however in general the following features are required;

  • Good depth – orthotics are generally slightly thicker than the insole which comes in your shoes. For this reason having reasonable depth is very advantageous when it comes to fitting orthotics.
  • Removable insole – relevant to the above point, a removable insole is basically non negotiable with orthotics. If you cannot remove this then your foot will be elevated too high in your shoe either causing discomfort across the top of your foot or causing your heels to slip.
  • Stable base – orthotics are designed specifically for your lower limb mechanics, however putting an orthotic in a flimsy, unstable shoe will not get your the best results possible. Will they still improve function, yes, but your results will be much more significant if the orthotic is fitted into a stable soled shoe as this works with the orthotic to control your mechanics.

Essentially, your orthotics should fit into any shoes which possess the above features. If your orthotics are initially fitted into a jogger for example, and you then wish to transfer this to a slightly slimmer dress style shoe there should not be any significant dramas. If the orthotic appears too wide or thick, minor adjustments are easily able to be made to accommodate for this. Orthotics can feel different to a certain extent in different shaped shoes however this does not mean they are not working as effectively or are unable to be worn in those shoes.

If you have a pair of shoes you have been hoping to wear your orthotics in however they just don’t feel quite right, give our friendly team a call today on 4045 5749 and your podiatrist will be able to assess the footwear and complete any adjustments required on site during your appointment.
