Do I have a bunion – Cairns Diagnosis and Treatment

What is a bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. It occurs when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place. This causes the tip of your big toe to get pulled toward the smaller toes and forces the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out. The skin over the bunion might be red and sore. The exact cause is not clear. However, possible causes may include: Genetics (family history), arthritis, other conditions and hypermobility syndromes and the major contributor: ill – fitting shoes (Ladies! High heeled shoes are included!). Bunion treatment Cairns is available at each of the FNQ Podiatry and Orthotics clinics.

So, what can FNQ Podiatry & Orthotics do to help?

Our highly trained Podiatrists will run you through a thorough Cairns Podiatry biomechanical assessment to assess all the surrounding structures of the foot and grade your bunion stage. We also assess swelling, bruising and range of motion of the joint to get an accurate idea how to best help you. We would also assess your current shoes and recommend better shoes if needed.

The biomechanical assessment will also examine your gait on a treadmill (if you can walk on your sore foot properly). Our video gait analysis allows us to have an accurate image of how the foot and ankle are functioning and if it is a contributing factor to your bunion.

Treatment is largely based around maintaining joint mobility as much as possible

  • RICE regime when it flares up
  • Custom orthotics  to offload the problem areas while addressing biomechanical issues we find
  • Joint mobilisation of the foot joints to improve range of movement
  • Dry needling to assist with release of tightened muscles contributing to the pain.
  • Progressive strengthening program:

All our friendly FNQ Podiatry and Orthotics Podiatrists are trained to perform a thorough biomechanical assessment and the treatment will be tailored to what we find! There is no, one-size-fits-all, treatment.

If you are tired of the pain preventing you from doing the activities you love to do, call our friendly team to arrange an assessment. Appointments are available online at www.fnqpodiatry.com.au or on 40 455 749
